There are four categories of waste: compostable, recyclable, garbage, and hazardous. Depending on the type of waste, it is processed differently. Compostable waste is biodegradable wastes such as food waste and garden waste. They can be composted and turned into soil conditioner or organic fertilizer, by mixing them with soil, water, shredded paper, etc. Recyclable waste must be free from contamination and it can be converted into suitable beneficial use.
Garbage is either incinerated or sent to landfills. In terms of incineration, the major pros are that:
1. it decreases mass by around 75-80%, thus reduces the demand for landfills.
2. It destroys contaminant medical wastes and other life-risking garbage.
3. It turns waste into heat or energy.
However, the biggest con is probably the process may emit toxins and pollutants that harm local air quality. Landfills are ideally mainly used for materials that cannot be recycled, composted, or incinerated such as clean dirt, gravel, brick, etc. However, according to the US EPA, the material most frequently encountered in landfills is plain old paper. It sometimes accounts for more than 40 percent of a landfill’s content. Newspapers alone can take up as much as 13% of the space in US landfills. Therefore, the appropriate disposal of different types of waste is critical to preserving the environment.
